Samsung Galaxy Ace

Samsung Galaxy Ace

The first timer
Device: Galaxy Ace
Price: RM999

If the loved one you're thinking of is new to the smartphone game but keen to start with the Android platform, then consider introducing the Galaxy Ace into the picture.

This entry-level smartphone is a tidy little package with a glossy front, silver sides, and textured back and a 3.5in touchscreen.

It also sports a 5-megapixel autofocus camera which is complemented by an LED flash and a tiny slit for the loud speaker.

One of the biggest draws with upgrading to a smartphone is the ability to connect to social networks and share content.

The camera on the Ace is perfect for such purposes and also offers several nifty features such as smile detection and a panorama sweep mode.

Running on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system, it also has Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 interface which gives it a slightly different look and feel compared to other Android smartphones.
Holding down the home button brings up a window showing all applications running in the background. It also doubles up as a handy task manager for killing unwanted applications to conserve battery life.

The customised drag-down notification area also houses handy switches for turning on/off WiFi, Bluetooth, rotation lock and mute settings.

If there's any fears or hesitation with the thought of touchscreen typing, the Galaxy Ace boasts an alternate method for text input with Swype.

This aptly named feature basically allows users to enter a word by sliding their finger from letter to letter.

It may feel weird at first but after a couple of swipes (pun intended), you may be surprised to find that you could potentially type faster than on traditional Qwerty keyboards.

This is the easy-to-handle phone to get for that curious older relative who wants to jump onboard the smartphone-wagon but remains unsure if they'll enjoy the ride.

Be sure to pair this gift with a microSD card as the 153MB of built-in storage won't get you very far, especially when the inner shutterbug is unleashed.
